Francisco Verdugo

Don Francisco Verdugo (* March 13, 1537 in Talavera de la Reina, † September 22, 1595 in Luxembourg ) Marshal, Admiral and governor was the Spanish Crown in the Netherlands.

Life

Francisco Verdugo left in 1555 as a 19 -year-old in the wake of the Duke of Alba home to Spain to fight as a simple soldier against the enemies of Catholicism. At the Battle of Saint- Quentin on August 10, 1557, he stood out by his unbridled courage from the rest of the troops.

In 1573 Verdugo was, who was now ascended to the admiral of the Spanish fleet in Flanders, Governor of the city of Haarlem, which he had besieged and taken successfully with Fadrique Álvarez de Toledo.

Verdugo was the successor of the late George of Lalang 1581-1594 last Spanish governor of the northern provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel. His reign, however, was not recognized by the independence fighters of the newly founded Republic of the Seven United Provinces, so that there were two governors. On the side of the Republic, it was William of Orange, together with his successor William Louis of Nassau.

Family

Verdugo married in 1578 Dorothea, a daughter of Count Peter Ernst von Mansfeld and Margaretha von Brederode. The wedding took place in Luxembourg.
