Henri Fehr

G. Henri Fehr ( born February 2, 1870 in Zurich, † November 2, 1954 in Geneva) was a Swiss mathematician. He was professor of mathematics at the University of Geneva.

Fehr studied in Geneva, at the ETH Zurich and in Paris, where he received his Licentiate as a teacher in 1892. After that, he taught mathematics at secondary schools in Geneva and from 1895 to 1900 as a lecturer at the University, where he gave lectures on projective geometry, among others, and differential geometry. In 1899 he received his doctorate at the University of Geneva with a thesis on the vector calculus and vector analysis of Hermann Grassmann. In 1900 he became professor of higher algebra and geometry at the Univerisät Geneva ( Faculté des Sciences ). He was a professor and later dean, vice-rector and rector at the University of Geneva and focused particularly on the scientific organization and mathematics pedagogy. In 1945, he went into retirement.

1913-15 he was the second President of the Swiss Mathematical Society, which he founded in 1910 with Rudolf Fueter and Marcel Grossmann, and as of 1935 its honorary member. He was also co-founder of the magazines " Commentarii Mathematici Helvetici " and " L' Enseignement Mathématique ". The latter journal he founded in 1899 with his friend Charles -Ange Laisant ( 1841-1920 ). She was devoted to mathematics education and attempted to international contacts and international understanding without national preferences. In 1908 he was involved in the founding of the International Mathematical Teaching Commission ( IMUK ) participated in Rome and was its first secretary. Even after the new town after the enmities of the time of World War I. In 1928 he was its secretary and also in re-establishing the ICMI 1952 he was involved.
