Henric Benzelius

Henrik (sometimes: Henric ) Benzelius ( born August 7, 1689 Strängnäs, † May 20, 1758 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian and Archbishop of Uppsala.

Family

Henrik Benzelius belongs to the major theologian family Benzelius. His father Erik Benzelius the Elder was a bishop and later archbishop Straengnaes, his mother Margaretha Odhelia (1653-1693) was a granddaughter of Archbishop Peter Kenicius. Of their children, three sons were ennobled with the name Benzelstierna and had high secular offices held while Henrik was the successor of his brothers Erik and Jacob archbishop.

Benzelius was married since 1725 Emerentia Rudenschöld ( 1708-1770 ), the daughter of the Bishop Torsten Rudeen.

Life

After studying at the University of Uppsala Benzelius undertook from 1712 to 1718 an extensive study tour of Eastern Europe and the Middle East. In the camp of the Swedish King Karl XII. in Bender in Moldova today he was captured during the scuffle of Bender in 1713 and followed the king to castle Demotika and on to Timurtasch Adrian Opel. At his request, he spent from April 1714 for 15 months in Constantinople Opel to the study of Oriental languages ​​and then traveled through Asia Minor, Cyprus, Syria and Palestine to Egypt. About Livorno he arrived in September 1716 to Paris, where he further study purposes was staying half years. The return journey took him from Altdorf, where he defended in 1718 a disputation with Johann Wilhelm Baier, as well as suffering and Utrecht to Gothenburg.

1719 Benzelius Praepositus was at Lund University and the following year rose to associate professor. In 1728 he became professor of oriental languages. In 1732 he was promoted to professor of theology, and in 1733 Dr. theol. doctorate. As Bishop of Lund (1740-1747), he became member of the Reichstag and worked until his death as a supporter of " Hutpartei ". 1751/52 and 1755/56, he was spokesman for the minister prior to the Reichstag. Also remarkable is its use against Pietism.

After his brother Jacob 's death Benzelius was appointed in September 1747 as Archbishop of Uppsala and served until his death as the highest dignitaries of the Church of Sweden. In 1746 he was inducted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
