Henrich Steffens was the son of Henrich Steffens ( born February 17, 1744 Berbice, † March 27, 1798 in Rendsburg ) of an immigrant from Holstein barber and surgeon. His mother 's maiden name was Bang and died in 1788 in Copenhagen. The maternal grandmother was related to the theologians Frederik Grundtvig. Steffens devoted himself since 1790 in Copenhagen scientific studies and then traveled to Norway. In 1796 he gave at the University of Kiel scientific lectures, but turned the following year at the University of Jena, where he became a follower of Schelling's philosophy of nature. In 1800 he went to Freiberg. With a scientific funding by the mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner Steffens Geognostic could elaborate geological essays which he stated later in his Handbook of Oryktognosie on.

After his return to Denmark in 1802 he lectured at the University of Copenhagen, but went in 1804 as a professor at the Friedrich - University of Halle, where he edited the broad philosophical science, and 1811 to the new Silesian Friedrich Wilhelm University in Breslau. In 1813 he went as a volunteer with the wars of liberation to the first capture of Paris. After the peace he returned to his academic teaching profession back to Wroclaw. For the years in office 1821/22 and 1829/30, he was elected Rector of the Prussian university.

In 1832 he followed the call of the Friedrich -Wilhelms -Universität zu Berlin. Here Karl Marx and Søren Kierkegaard were among his listeners. 1834/35 he was again rector.

Steffens sat down with time trends critically. He took in what is called Breslau Turn feud with his caricatures of the Sacred and the turn goal against Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (due to the over-emphasis of the German National and the Physical in Education ) party. In ecclesiastical terms, he joined the Altlutheranern. In his book, On the false theology and the true faith, he emphasized to his friend Friedrich Schleiermacher, the importance of the historical: as " the fundamental miracle of the Christian faith ," he saw " the conception of Christ by the Holy Spirit and his resurrection." To Heinrich Heine cub Germany - the repressed romance - Steffens said:

"The new poetry did not believe in an afterlife. The earth should pass on all questions of life response; only at death was believed. "

Steffens was one of the main representatives of the speculative direction of scientific research. These is his anthropology.

His poetic works include The Family Walseth and Leith, The four Norwegians and Malkolm. They are characterized by masterful descriptions of nature its Nordic home.

The grave of Steffens is located in the cemetery of Trinity Church II at the Bergmann in Berlin- Kreuzberg ( panel C), where Schleiermacher has his final resting place.
