Henrique Campos

Henrique Xavier de Oliveira Campos ( born February 9, 1909 in Santarém, † December 18, 1983 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese actor and film director.

Career

Even as a schoolboy he played theater, and served as a high school student theater group of its Catholic community association. In 1931 he went to Lisbon and was in pieces To Bragança ( Vasco Mendonça Alves ) celebrate his stage debut as a professional actor in the theater company Companhia de Alves da Cunha, on Politeama Theatre. There were other roles at the Teatro Politeama and later at the Teatro Avenida. In 1938 he played for the first time in a feature film, Os Fidalgos da Casa Mourisca the former UFA - actor Arthur Duarte. Fascinated by cinema, he went to Spain, among others to assist in the directors Benito Perojo Florián Rey. He then returned to Portugal to shoot his first film as a director. The shooting order Homem no Ribatejo ( " A man in Ribatejo " ) began in 1943, and after some difficulty he had first time in 1946 ( at the Teatro Politeama ).

There followed a series of films that the folkloric Ribatejo, the comedy in the style of the Portuguese box office hit of the 30s and 40s, and other varieties of entertainment films devoted themselves. His film O Homem do Dia ("The Man of the Day" ) from 1958, on the then-popular cyclist Alves Barbosa, was the first Portuguese film in Cinemascope

He devoted himself to further the commercial entertainment film, but the end of the heyday of the Portuguese film and steadily declining visitor numbers restricted his opportunities an increasingly. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, he moved to the USA and worked there mainly as a producer, without obtaining greater success. His last project idea to make a film about the Portuguese immigration to the U.S., he could not realize.
