Ribatejo Province

Ribatejo ( Portuguese for the banks of the Tagus ) is a former province in the Tagus level northeast of Lisbon (Portugal ), which also bears the nickname Garden of Lisbon.

The eleven provinces in Portugal were established in 1936 by the Estado Novo dictatorship, and in 1976, two years after the Carnation Revolution, officially dissolved. These provinces live as regional designations part in everyday language in Portugal continues, so does the Ribatejo, for his horse and bull breeding, its lively folklore, and for its diverse agriculture ( particularly rice, wine, grain, vegetables, and fruit) is known.

The former province of Ribatejo corresponded approximately to the present-day District of Santarém, belonged to the Ponte de Sor with a circle of today's Portalegre District, and Vila Franca de Xira and Azambuja two circles of today's District of Lisbon.

The largest cities in the Ribatejo and Santarém were Tomar.
