Ponte de Sor (also: Ponte de Sôr ) is a city ( Cidade ) and a circle ( concelho ) in Portugal, with 16 691 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

Finds indicate a prehistoric settlement. First mentioned in writing was the place as a station of the passing here Roman road, the third military road from Emerita Augusta (now Mérida) to Olisipo (now Lisbon). A new building erected in the 19th century the Roman bridge over the river Ribeira de Sor can be seen, and also a Milestones of the Roman road have been preserved. The Roman Bridge gave the place its name ( to Ponte = Bridge ). Not much is known about the place during the Arab kingdom of al -Andalus. Probably the present town was repopulated during the Reconquista, when the area came to the Knights Templar.

Ponte de Sor received in 1199, according to other sources already in 1161 first town charter by King Manuel I in the course of his administrative reforms in 1514 renewed.

The former small-town ( Vila ) Ponte de Sor became a town ( Cidade ) 1985.

Buildings

Among the monuments of the town include the megalithic (Portuguese Anta ) of Cabeceiros, fountains, and various Art Deco and other historic houses and public buildings, including train stations, school buildings, court, city hall, or the theater and cinema building. A number of religious buildings are listed, such as the parish church Igreja de Paroquial Ponte de Sor, named after their patron also Igreja de São Francisco de Assis.

The historic center of Ponte de Sor also as a whole is under monument protection.

Cultural sites

The Cultural Centro de Artes e Cultura is set in a historic building in the town. On 10,000 m² there City Museum, Public Library, various galleries, meeting rooms and other cultural institutions are housed.

Economy

Ponte de Sor is considered to be a focus of the Portuguese cork industry, also include Suppliers to the automotive and aerospace industries located here. Traditional arts and crafts are produced here, especially from cork and wicker.

Tourism plays only a minor role, however, has gained in importance as individual tourism, about the camping, family hotels, and furnished in historic buildings Hostels of rural tourism. A main attraction is the Barragem de Montargil.

Traffic

Ponte de Sor is a station on the railway line Linha do Leste. Since the setting of the passenger traffic on the route in January 2012, the place can not be reached by train.
