Henry A. G. Lee

Henry AG Lee ( * 1818 in Virginia (USA), † 1851) was an American politician.

Life

Lee was born in Virginia around 1818. In 1843 he was part of the John C. Frémont 's Army expedition, which passed through the western United States, including the present state of Oregon. During this expedition, he was sent with a dispatch to Kit Carson, with the order to Carson to join this group. When the group split later, Lee remained with John Fremont, before he returned to Oregon on September 22. After he had settled there, he was in 1845 elected to the " Provisional Legislature of Oregon ". He represented there the Clackamas District and served as speaker in the December meeting.

In 1846 he was the second editor of the Oregon Spectator, the first magazine in the region. He replaced William G. T'Vault and remained for further 9 issues editor before George Law Curry took over this position. After the war against the Indians ( Cayuse War ) was completed, Lee was named 1848 Superintendent of Indian Affairs by Governor George Abernethy. In 1849, he sought his fortune in the California Gold Rush. He was successful there and was able, when he returned to Oregon City, founded in 1850 a company. This year, he embarked to New York to there diverse inventory for his store to get, but died on the Panama fever on his return to Oregon in 1851.
