Henry C. Brewster

Henry Colvin Brewster ( born September 7, 1845 in Rochester, New York, † January 29, 1928 in Canandaigua, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1895 and 1899 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Henry Brewster attended the public schools of his home. In 1863 he began a nearly lifelong career at the Traders' National Bank. Until 1868, he worked there as a File Clerk ( Clerk ); 1868 to 1894 he was cashier. Between 1907 and 1917 he was president of the bank and then to 1923 Chairman of the Board. In 1893 and 1902 he served as president of the Chamber of Commerce of Rochester. Brewster was also co-founder of the New York State Bankers' Association. In 1894 he was the Vice President and in 1899 he became president of this association. Politically, he joined the Republican Party. He became vice president of the New York State League of Republican Clubs and president of the Monroe County League. In 1897, he was also vice president of the National League of Republican Clubs.

In the congressional elections of 1894 Brewster was in the 31 electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John Van Voorhis on March 4, 1895. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1899 two legislative sessions. In this time of the Spanish-American War of 1898. Fell since 1897 Brewster was chairman of the Committee on Alcoholic Liquor Traffic.

In 1898 he gave up another Congress candidate. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, he put his past activities continued until 1923. In June 1900 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia in part, was nominated to the President William McKinley for re-election. In 1923, Henry Brewster pulled back into retirement. He died on January 29, 1928 during a visit to Canandaigua and was buried in Rochester.
