Henry Chilver, Baron Chilver

Amos Henry Chilver, Baron Chilver FRS, Feng (* October 30, 1926; † July 8, 2012 in Cornwall ) was a British engineer scientist and politician ( Conservative Party ).

Life and career

Chilver was the son of Amos Henry Chilver and his wife AE Mack was born. After visiting the Southend High School for Boys, he studied at the University of Bristol, where he graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. In 1951, he earned a PhD in the field of Civil Engineering (Civil Engineering ) in 1962 and a Doctor of Science. From 1952 to 1954 he was a lecturer ( Lecturer ) at the University of Bristol. From 1958 to 1961 he taught at Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge.

From 1961 to 1969 he was professor of civil engineering Chadwick at University College London. From 1970 to 1989 he was Vice-Chancellor ( Vice-Chancellor ) Cranfield University. He was also a member of the Board of Directors (Member of Court ) from Cranfield University.

In the early 1980s, he was chairman ( Chairman ) of the Northern Ireland Higher Education Review Group, which with the preparation of a report (called Chilver Report) was commissioned for the unification of the common in Northern Ireland Initial Teacher Education ( ITE). 1983 Chilver successor of Jock Campbell, Baron Campbell of Eskan as Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Milton Keynes Development Corporation ( MKDC ).

From 1982 to 1995 he was president of the Institute of Management Services; 1993-1995 President of the Institute of Logistics. Chilver was 1988-1991 Chairman ( Chair ) of the Universities Funding Council. He looked aspects of cooperation of universities with each other critically. From 1992 to 1995 he was Chairman of the mine company English China Clays. On February 25, 1993, he was appointed Chairman ( Chairman ) of the mining company RJB Mining. He remained until 1997, in office. Chilver was also a director of Imperial Chemical Industries.

From 1995 to 1998 he was Chairman ( Chairman ) at Chiroscience plc, and from 1996 to 1998 at the Plymouth Development Corporation. Chilver was from 1993 to 1995 director of the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca plc.

Chilver wrote two books: 1958 Problems in Engineering Structures with RS Ashby and 1959 Strength of Materials with John Case, who died before the completion of the book.

Membership in the House of Lords

Chilver was appointed Life peer as Baron Chilver, of Cranfield in the County of Bedfordshire on 14 July 1987. On 15 July 1987 he was officially introduced to the House of Lords with the support of Rhys Lloyd, Baron Lloyd of Kilgerran and Max Beloff, Baron Beloff. His inaugural address was delivered on 15 July 1992 on the topic of industrial policy.

As subjects of political interest, he stated on the website of the House Education, economy and environment.

He talked about industrial policy, small businesses, universities and Higher Education. He reported to the House of Lords only irregularly word. In November 1992, he spoke to small enterprises. In 1993 he volunteered in an article on universities to speak. It was not until seven years later, he said on 14 June 2000, on the topic of Higher Education. This was his last speech there. On a vote he took part last on 21 March 2005.

In the analyzed period (2000-2012) his presence was low and was in the single digits. Most recently, he was in 2010 present.

Awards

1977 Chilver was Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and in 1982 at the Royal Society. He was a Knight Bachelor in 1978. He received an honorary Doctor of Doctor of Science from the University of Leeds (1982 ), the University of Bristol (1983 ), the University of Salford, University of Strathclyde (1986 ), the University of Buckingham (1990 ), the University of Bath (1986 ), the Cranfield Institute of Technology (1989) and the Technical University of Compiègne (1990).

Chilver was since 1981 Honorary Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and Honorary Member ( Companion ) of the Institute of Management.

Family and Private

Chilver married in 1959 Claudia Grigson, the sister ship of the technician Christopher Grigson. The marriage produced five children. He died on 8 July 2012 at the age of 85 years at his home in Cornwall.
