Henry Gray

Henry Gray ( probably * 1827, † probably June 12th, 1861 in London ) was an English anatomist, surgeon and author.

Life

Gray wrote in 1845 as a student at St. George's Hospital in London, where he worked as a demonstrator and lecturer on anatomy later. While still a student, he was awarded a prize from the Royal College of Surgeons for his essay The Origin, Connexions and Distribution of nerves to the human eye and its appendages, illustrated by comparative dissections of the eye in other vertebrate animals. In 1852 he became a member of the Royal Society.

In 1858 the first edition of Gray 's Anatomy was, with more than 750 pages and over 350 illustrations published. The illustrations were made by Henry Vandyke Carter and contributed significantly to the success of the work. The book has evolved over the decades into one of the most well-known standard works on medicine in the English-speaking world.

Gray died in June 1861 of smallpox. His grave is located in London at Highgate Cemetery.
