Henry II, Count of Nassau

Henry II of Empires (* 1190, † by 1251 ) in the years 1198 bis 1250/51 Count of Nassau.

Henry was the eldest son of Gwendolyn and of goats grove Walram Count I of the House of Nassau, which he inherited in 1198 at the age of eight years. In national politics he was, up on a siding Emperor Otto IV in the years 1209-1211 largely staufer friendly. So he sat trapped in the years 1212-1214 also the enemy of the Emperor Frederick II, Archbishop Dietrich von Trier; also the Archbishop of Mainz was one of his opponents, against whom he built the castle of Sonneberg, while Dietrich fortified against the Nassauer Montabaur. Support was Heinrich at Archbishop Engelbert I of Cologne, which he however had to cede the half of the county victories for his protection in 1224. 1247 he took the side of William of Holland and started from 1248 a feud with Sophie of Brabant and their son Henry to the Herborner country that bedeviled the relationship of Nassau - Hesse for centuries after his death. In this context, his construction of the castle in Dillenburg is seen.

Henry was the owner of the Upper advocacy of the Georg pin in Limburg an der Lahn during the construction of the Limburg Cathedral. In 1239 he transferred at the request of his vassal Frederick vom Hain income of the Netphener parish to the Premonstratensian monastery pin at Keppel Hilchenbach. His descendants took over the patronage of the monastery.

Progeny

Henry II married Matilda of Geldern- Zütphen ( † after 1247 ). With her he had 11 children, including:
