Henry Nes

Henry Nes ( born May 20, 1799 in York, Pennsylvania, † September 10, 1850 ) was an American politician. Between 1843 and 1845, and again from 1847 to 1850, he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Henry Nes attended preparatory schools and then studied at Princeton College. After a subsequent medical studies and his medical license, he started in York to work in this profession. Later he hit a also a political career. In the congressional elections of 1842 Nes was an independent Democrat in the 15th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Benjamin Alden Bidlack on March 4, 1843. Until March 3, 1845, he was initially able to complete a term in Congress. This period was burdened by the tensions between President John Tyler and the Whigs. It was also at that time already been discussed about a possible annexation of the independent Republic of Texas since 1836 by Mexico.

After the end of his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives Henry Nes joined the Whigs. In the 1846 elections, he was elected as its candidate in the 15th district of his state in Congress, where he replaced the Democrats Moses McClean on March 4, 1847 which was two years before become his successor. After a re-election he was able to exercise this office until his death on September 10, 1850. Between 1847 and 1849 he was chairman of the Committee on Invalidätsrenten and the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business. Until 1847/1848 his time was still dominated the Congress of the events of the Mexican-American War. After that was the question of slavery in the focus of discussions.
