Henry Nicholas Ridley

Henry Nicholas Ridley ( born December 10, 1855 in West Harling Hall, Norfolk, England; † October 24, 1956 in Kew, Surrey, England ) was a British botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Ridl. ".

Life

Henry Nicholas Ridley in 1877 acquired the academic degree of Bachelor of Arts at Exeter College, Oxford. He became in 1881 a member of the Linnean Society of London and in 1907 a member of the Royal Society. From 1880 to 1888 he was employed as a botanist at the British Museum. He took 1887 a scientific expedition to the island of Fernando de Noronha in part.

Ridley went to Singapore in 1888, where he directed until 1911 the Botanical Gardens. He was also responsible for forest management and contributed to the development of the rubber - cultures on the Malay Peninsula at.

His particular interest was the relationship between animal and plant world. He attended the Christmas Island and it was dedicated by thereto an stamp. In 1950 he was awarded the Linnean Medal of the Linnean Society of London.
