Henry Slocum (tennis)

Henry Warner Slocum Jr. ( born May 28, 1862 in Syracuse, New York; † 22 October 1949 in New York City ) was an American tennis player and winner of the U.S. Championships in 1888 and 1889.

Career

Slocum, son of the Northern States General Henry Warner Slocum and congressmen, already played as a law student at Yale University football and tennis. In 1883 he took part in the first orientation of the Intercollegiate Championships in tennis and pulled to the side of Walter Camp the doubles title.

At the American Championships in Newport, he won in 1888 at the fourth attempt in singles. The following year he was able to defend the individual title and also win at the side of Howard Taylor the title in doubles.

After the victory, Slocum concentrated on his work as a lawyer. In 1892 he came back to Newport, but had a defeat with 0:6, 0:6 and 0:6 in the first round against WN Ryerson accept. Recently he took in 1913 to the U.S. championships. 1892 and 1893 he also served as President of the U.S. Tennis Association USTA.

He died in 1949 in New York. In 1955 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
