Herb Hall

Herbert " Herb" Hall ( born March 28, 1907 in Reserve ( Louisiana); † 5 March 1996 in San Antonio, Texas ) was an American jazz clarinetist and alto saxophonist.

He is the brother of jazz clarinetist Edmond Hall and son of clarinetist Edward Hall. Herb Hall first played guitar and banjo ( in Niles Jazz Band 1923-1925 ) before joining the clarinet. In 1926 he went to Baton Rouge, where he played with Kid Augustine Victor, and played from 1927 in New Orleans in the band of Sidney Desvigne. 1929 to 1945 he was in the Territory of Don Albert band in San Antonio in Texas. After that he lived Philadelphia, where he played with Herman Autrey and a few years later in New York City. He played in 1955 with Doc Cheatham and toured 1955/56, with Sammy Price in Europe and North Africa and played from 1957 with Eddie Condon. In the 1960s, he starred alongside Condon with Wild Bill Davison (Tour in 1968/69 with the Jazz Giants ) and in the 1970s with Bob Greene ( in the Jelly Roll Morton Show), Don Ewell and Red Balaban.

He also took under his own name with a quartet with Arvell Shaw, Buzzy Drootin, Claude Hopkins ( Old Tyme Modern, Sackville Records 1969), in an album at Storyville in 1970 and with Louis Cottrell Jr GHB 1980.
