Herbert Greenfield

Herbert Greenfield ( born November 25, 1869 in Winchester, England; † August 23, 1949 in Calgary ) was a Canadian politician and farmer. From 13 August 1921 to 23 November 1925 he was Prime Minister of the Province of Alberta and leader of the political wing of the farmers' cooperative United Farmers of Alberta.

Biography

Born in the English county of Hampshire Greenfield immigrated in 1892 with his family to Canada. In the province of Ontario, he worked on various farms as laborers. In 1906 he moved on to Alberta and built up his own business in Westlock on. He was involved in local politics and eventually became president of the Association of Municipalities of Alberta.

As the United Farmers of Alberta ( UFA) in July 1921 surprisingly won the provincial elections and the government could make, they had no real leadership. Of the newly elected members of parliament no one seemed willing to assume the office of the Prime Minister. Finally, Greenfield said, then as interim vice president of the UFA, willing and has been appointed by Lieutenant Governor Robert G. Brett as the new Prime Minister on August 13, 1921. The Prime Minister did not have a candidate in the elections; the MP for the constituency of Peace River subsequently went back to his favor and Greenfield was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta on December 9 by acclamation.

Greenfields government expanded its road network and improved schools and hospitals. She raised in 1924 to the nine years previously imported alcohol prohibition and founded the Alberta Liquor Control Board, which was to regulate the sale of alcohol. However, one of their election promises not solved a UFA: A state-owned bank, the farmers should grant loans to low interest rates. From 1923 Greenfield was often absent for health reasons and was unable to perform his duties.
