Herbert Smith (footballer)

Herbert Smith ( born November 22, 1879 in Witney, Oxfordshire, † January 6, 1951 ) was an English footballer.

Smith was primarily active in amateur sports, but also appeared regularly for Reading FC in the Southern League to professional league games and there was even captain. The other football teams, has played for Smith during his career were, in addition to his hometown club FC Witney or Oxford City, Derby County, Stoke ( later: " Stoke City" ), Richmond Association and a selection of Oxfordshire.

At the Olympic football tournament in London in 1908 he came up with the English amateur national team, which took as a selection of Great Britain, in all three games for use and won the gold medal. Also during this tournament he played in parallel for his club in Reading.

Comprising a total of seventeen appearances for the amateur team of left-back 1905-1906 came up with four caps for the England national team and was able to win all these games.

Smith, who was also active as a cricketer, was named after his active sports life president of the Football Association of Oxfordshire and held this position until his death in January 1951.
