Herbert Smith (mineralogist)

George Frederick Herbert Smith ( * May 26, 1872, † April 20, 1953 ) was a British mineralogist, the curator at the British Museum (later Natural History Museum London ).

In 1897 he became an assistant in the Department of Mineralogy, 2nd class, 1st class 1908 Assistant 1921 Assistant secretary and secretary of the museum in 1931. Shortly before his retirement ( 1937) he became in 1935 the head of the Mineralogy Department ( Keeper of Mineralogy ).

He developed a refractometer for jewelers and discovered the mineral paratacamite (1905 ).

In 1972 discovered in Chile green copper mineral Herbertsmithtit is named after him.
