Herbert Strabel

Herbert Strabel ( born October 14, 1927 in Berlin ) is a German art director and Oscar winner.

Life and work

Strabel began in 1942 a lesson on the run by Gustaf State Theatre, which he should belong to its closure in late summer 1944. Following this, he was drafted and came with end of war in Soviet captivity ( May 1945-April 1949 ). During this time he worked for two three-quarter years as a scene painter in the " Dramatic Theatre " in Karelian Pjetrosawodsk.

In April 1949 he returned to Berlin, finished his education at the State Theatre and worked there until 1952 as a painter. 1953 Strabel began his film work as a painter ( for films such as " The Bad auf der Tenne " and " Queen Louise " ), from the second half of the 50s he worked regularly with the set designer Rolf Zehetbauer together. With the beginning of the 60s Strabel, now in Munich became established, the interior decorator and finally to co- chief architect on the side Zehetbauers.

While Zehetbauer was responsible for the designs, it was mostly Strabels task to implement them. In the course of a more internationally oriented, West German film scene, Herbert Strabel English-language films since the 70s was also several times at the Munich area rotated involved. For his achievements at the 1971 mostly built in Munich U.S. movie musical Cabaret Strabel was, along with Zehetbauer and the Berlin colleague Hans -Jürgen Kiebach, awarded in 1973 with an Oscar. Towards the end of the decade he was moreover with two productions Ingmar Bergman.

Almost simultaneously came multiple jobs added by television. Strabel supervised there as the buildings for literary agents and TV games as well as for entertainment programs (eg, the decorations of the annual New Year's Eve shows). In September 1988, Herbert Strabel withdrew into private life.
