Hérémence, formerly German Armensi or Ermenz, is a municipality in the district Hérens in the French speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The community is known by the artificial lake Lac des Dix and its huge dam Grande- Dixence.

Geography

The municipality is located in the homonymous valley Val d' Hérémence. The neighboring communities of north clockwise are starting Vex, Saint- Martin, Evolène, Bagnes and Nendaz.

History

After Hérémence had heard a long time to Savoy, it was in 1260 transferred to the diocese of Sion. In 1268 it moved back to Savoy, where the whole Val d' Hérémence remained until 1476. This is in contrast to the Val d' Hérens.

Attractions

The Catholic parish church is a monumental concrete structure by the architect Walter conveyor, built in the years 1967-1970. For your controversial construction period, it is now considered a historically important architecture church building of the 20th century in Switzerland.
