Hermann Haken

Hermann Haken ( born July 12, 1927 in Leipzig) is Emeritus Professor of the Chair of Theoretical Physics at the University of Stuttgart and the founder of synergetics.

After studying mathematics and physics in Halle ( Saale) and Erlangen and his doctorate in mathematics at the University of Erlangen and residencies in the UK and the U.S., he was born in 1960 to the chair of theoretical physics at the University of Stuttgart called ( retiring in 1995 ). He dealt with non-linear optics (especially Laser Physics ), solid state physics, statistical physics, group theory. Hooks built his institute within a short time into an international center of laser theory, after Theodore Maiman In May 1960, realized the first experimental laser. 1962 could hook introduce a closed theory of the laser, which gave the Institute an international reputation. The interpretation of the laser principle as self-assembly of non-equilibrium systems in the late 1960s led to the development of synergetics, as its founder hook is known today. He is the author of several books, including an introduction to Synergetics, and editor of a book series on this area. Later he turned to applications of synergetics to the study of brain function.

In 1982 Hook was elected a member of the Leopoldina, 1984, he was inducted into the Order Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts. In 1990 he was awarded the Max Planck Medal of the German Physical Society.
