Hermann is a city in Missouri in the United States and since 1842 the administrative seat of Gasconade County. It is located south of the Missouri River in the so-called Missouri Rhineland, one founded in the mid 19th century by German immigrants wine growing area.

History

The town was founded by the German resettlement society to Philadelphia in 1837, which also bought 45.73 km ² large pieces of land on Gasconade River for settlement. It was named after the Cheruscan Hermann and should be a self-sufficient colony with agriculture and industry.

After the wine had blossomed for the first time in the mid-19th century, the wine growing region in 1983 as one of the first officially recognized in the U.S. as Hermann American Viticultural Area. Although the cultivation came through the prohibition to a halt, but he was living in the 1960s again. Today, the area includes seven wine farms.

2009 celebrated the place the 2000th anniversary of the Varus Battle.

Events

Hermann held the last weekend in March, a sausage fest, during the third weekend in May, a May Day and in October an Oktoberfest. In addition, the wine also has tourist importance.
