Hermann AVA

Hermann AVA is a since August 18, 1983 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives recognized wine region in the U.S. state of Missouri.

Location

The vineyards here are spread over the management unit Gasconade County. The wine-growing area with the status of American Viticultural Area is an enclave within the parent Appellation Ozark Mountain AVA. The area is located south of the Missouri River near the eponymous town of Hermann, halfway between the cities of St. Louis and Jefferson City. There currently use 7 wineries designation of origin for distribution of their products.

The area is located near the floodplain of the Missouri River. The alluvial soil deposited can be up to 9 m deep. The climatic conditions are often compared with those of Germany. The selection of varieties is not limited to indigenous grape varieties but also include species from the families of Vitis vinifera, Vitis labrusca and French hybrid vines.
