In 1871 he married Sophie Schroll, who was born in Nuremberg daughter of the engraver, the couple had three children. 1880 and 1891, he stayed to study in Rome. Hermann Kaulbach died on 9 December 1909 and was buried at the Old South Cemetery in Munich.

Reception

Kaulbach's oil paintings were public, as well as the official art criticism, as "... interesting design of historical material that is especially in the refined treatment of the irrelevance while the main content emerges less meaningful ." But the painter was not without controversy: his image of Lucrezia Borgia was "too lewd ... " by critics as flatly refused and his coronation of St. Elizabeth by Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen was disparagingly referred to as " costume painting" dismissed.
