Hermann Wagner
Hermann Wagner ( born May 20, 1941 in Freudenstadt ) is a German physician, former Professor of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and Alt- Dean of the Medical Faculty of the Technical University of Munich.
Life
Wagner studied medicine at the Eberhard -Karls- University Tübingen and received his doctorate in 1967. A research stay in Melbourne, Australia, he graduated in 1973 with a Ph. D. from. He continued his research at Paul Klein at the Institute of Microbiology of the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz from 1973 to 1983 continued.
In 1978 he was habilitated in Mainz. He followed in 1983 a professorship at the University of Ulm, Professor of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and Director of the Institute of Microbiology. In 1989 he was at the Technical University of Munich, where he worked as a research director of the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Hygiene, and taught. Wagner retired in late 2008.
Work
His main area of research is mechanisms of the protective immune response against pathogenic infections. First he analyzed the mechanisms of activation of killer T - cells. He then studied in this system, the role of bacterial superantigens. Since 1995 he has edited the Immunobiology of Toll-like receptors ( TLRs ). He recognized one of the first that specific CpG motif -containing bacterial / viral DNA via TLR9 activates the cells of the innate immune system, while TLR7 or TLR8 uridine - rich RNA recognizes.
In his Ulmer time he co-founded as a speaker the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB ) " Lymphohaemopoese " and cared for. In Munich, he developed the " Infection Immunology " as one of the scientific priorities of its faculty. He participated in the founding of the three SFBs its faculty and since 1999, Speaker of the SFB 456 " targets for tumor selective interventions". Wagner is one of the most cited immunologists in Europe.
In volunteer roles, he served as President of the German Society for Immunology, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Technical University of Munich and as Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Würzburg Interdisciplinary Centre for Clinical Research ( IZKF)
Honors and Awards
Wagner has been awarded the Behring - Kitasato Prize ( 1988). He received in 2001 an honorary doctorate from the Julius- Maximilians- University of Würzburg. In 2003 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon. The German Society for Immunology appointed him in 2005 as an honorary member. Wager was launched in 2007 as a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. In the same year he was awarded by the Bavarian Prime Minister, with the Bavarian Order of Merit. Wagner is a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 2008. In 2013 he received an honorary doctorate from the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.
