Hermigua

Hermigua is one of the six municipalities of the Canary Island of La Gomera. It lies in the northeast of the island. Hermigua is the same name of the administrative headquarters.

History

The valley Hermigua was already inhabited by the Guanches ( Natives ). For them, it belonged to the field of Mulagua. The origin of the community Hermigua, in the 16th century, when the village of Valle Alto arose.

Economy

Hermigua is considered the most water-rich valley of La Gomera and is supplied throughout the year from the Rio del Cedro. Therefore Hermigua lives next few tourists mainly from agriculture. The mostly sunny side of the valley was terraced to the highest level yet irrigable. Here, among other things, potatoes, papayas, bananas, cereals, legumes, squashes, beans, and grapes are grown.

Garajonay National Park, which belongs partly to the municipality of Hermigua is about six kilometers east of the center.

Places of interest

  • The landmark of the place, the characteristic twin rocks Roques de San Pedro, an old volcanic vent at Monteforte.
  • Valle Alto was the first settlement Hermiguas where the Iglesia de Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the same monastery, built in the years 1515-1520, are located. In its Baroque paintings, Moorish style elements and images of the Escuela are popular to see.
