Hermitage Castle

Hermitage Castle is a semi- ruined castle in the Scottish Borders region of Scotland. It is under the care of Historic Scotland, an agency of the Scottish Government for historical monuments. The castle has, due to its history and its appearance a reputation as one of the creepiest and most atmospheric in Scotland.

History

It is believed that the name derives from the Old French l' armitage ( " guard house "). It was known as the guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain as well as strength of Liddesdale. Hermitage Castle is also inextricably linked with the history of the Clan Armstrong, whose chief had his headquarters in nearby Mangerton Castle and a special role in the defense of the border with England was given.

The first castle was made of wood and was probably built by one Nicholas de Soulis around 1240, then still in the shape of a typical Norman Motte. The castle remained until about 1320 his family when his descendant William de Soulis of witchcraft and the attempted regicide of Robert I. and accused the country and the castle was taken as dilapidated pawn. Legend has it that Soulis tenants suffer the unbearable looting had him near the Nine Stane Rigg, a stone circle, held and cooked it in liquid lead to death.
