Hertník

Hertník ( until 1927 slovak " Heretník "; German Herknecht or Hertnecht, Hungarian Hertnek ) is a city and a municipality in eastern Slovakia, with 1042 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It belongs to Okres Bardejov, a part of the Prešov Region.

Geography

The municipality is situated by the stream Pastevník, a tributary of Sekčov, below the mountains Čergov west of the town. The nearest town is Bardejov, 11 kilometers north; the regional capital Prešov is 32 km from the center.

History

The town was founded in the first half of the 14th century by a German mayor with his peasant settlers on the site of the existing Herrschaftsguts Kobyly and is first mentioned in 1351 as Herkenecht. The name derives probably from the word " Herrenknecht " from. In order, the ruler of the newly created Herrschaftsguts were gender Perín, Zápolya, Forgách and more. 1828 are listed 111 houses and 806 inhabitants. The German -speaking population was quickly assimilated by the Slovak- Rusyn population, 1910 were inhabitants almost all Slovaks.
