Hesse-Rheinfels
The older Hesse- Rhine rock with the lower county Katzenelenbogen, the area around St. Goar ( left bank ) and Reichenberg, Hohenstein and Braubach ( right bank ), governed by a collateral line of the House of Hesse, was in the division of the country county of Hesse after the death of Landgrave Philip I the Magnanimous († 1567). Philip's eldest son, William IV, was Hesse -Kassel with about half of the entire territory, Hesse - Marburg came with about a quarter of the total territory to Louis IV, George I received Hesse -Darmstadt (essentially the former Obergrafschaft Katzenelenbogen ), and Philip II got Hessen- Rhein rock.
This first sub- Hessen- Rhein rock died already in 1583 the childless Philip II of. The lower county Katzenelenbogen or extinct Hesse- Rhine rock was divided between Hesse -Kassel, which was the main part, and Hesse -Darmstadt and Hesse - Marburg.
For the (second) younger Hesse- Rhine rock and the Hesse- Rhine rock -Rotenburg see Hesse -Rotenburg.
