Hierotheos Vlachos

Hierotheos Vlachos (Greek: Μητροπολίτης Ιερόθεος, real name Georgios Vlachos, Greek: Γεώργιος Βλάχος, born 1945 in Ioannina, Greece) is a Greek Orthodox bishop and Metropolitan of Nafpaktos and a significant Orthodox theologian.

Life

Vlachos studied at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he made the final in Orthodox theology. In 1971 he was ordained deacon and priest in 1972. In 1988 he was Archimandrite on Mount Athos. On July 20, 1995, his episcopal ordination, and his election as Bishop of Nafpaktos. Since then, he is a bishop of the diocese Metropolitan of Nafpaktos and Agios Vlassios.

Bishop Hierotheos taught for several years as well as Greek Orthodox Ethics at the Theological Institute of St. John of Damascus, the University of the Patriarchate of Antioch ( Rum Orthodox Church ) in northern Lebanon. Even in his youth, Bishop Hierotheos has very concerned with the fathers writings and also researched for some time in the libraries of Mount Athos, as well as collected texts. This was particularly interested in the theology and spirituality of Gregory Palamas.

Hierotheos Vlachos has many books and articles published, mainly on spiritual subjects. Most of his books have been translated in English and other languages. One of his most important works is the book " Orthodox Psychotherapy ". The theology of Bishop Hierotheos is heavily influenced by John Romanidis, the therapeutically - ascetic vision of faith at an academic level as well as an orientation on Hesychasm was important.

His published in German language essay " Orthodox Spirituality - a short introduction " is considered the standard text on Orthodox spirituality. Vlachos is considered one of the most intimate knowledge of the spirituality of Gregory Palamas and tries to develop in the context of tradition.

Honors

His book " The concept of the person in the Orthodox tradition " was awarded the first prize of the Academy of Athens as "the best theological publication of the 1991 and 1996 ".
