High Fens – Eifel Nature Park

The German -Belgian High Fens -Eifel, the German part is also called the North Eifel Nature Park, is a transboundary nature park with parts in the German states of North Rhine -Westphalia and Rhineland -Palatinate and in the Belgian province of Liège. He has a total area of 2442 km ².

Location

The nature park is located between Langerwehe and Eupen in the north and Bad Münster Eifel, Prüm and St. Vith in the south and includes six areas: the Rureifel, the high Eifel, the Kalkeifel, the Valley which Vennvorland and the High Moor, a raised bog and heath, the at the end of the last Ice Age 7500 years before.

The geographical name Nordeifel describes in the strict sense only the Eifel countryside between Aspen forest in the south and in the north of Aachen, Bad Münster Eifel in the east and on the Rureifel to the Belgian border in the west. The High Fens is geographically considered as another natural area of the total Eifel, however miteinbegriffen in the nature park.

History

In 1960, the President of the Government of the then existing government district Aachen, Hubert Schmitt Degenhardt, the club North Eifel Nature Park eV, whose chairman after him, the former mayor of Schleiden and the former director of community Hurtgenwald, Günter Schumacher were. Rhineland-Palatinate's part of the North Eifel Nature Park was reported on November 6, 1970 by an ordinance of the district office Prüm as a " conservation area North Eifel Nature Park ".

With the Intergovernmental Agreement of 3 February 1971, the North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, parts of the North Eifel Nature Park with the Belgian Parc Naturel Hautes Fagnes were merged to form the High Fens -Eifel. Emblem of the nature park is the black grouse.

Eifel National Park

In the midst of the natural park lies mainly on the former military training area Vogelsang and around the Urftstausee which was founded in 2004 and after the withdrawal of the Belgians from 1 January 2006 extended the Eifel National Park.
