Hildegard Peplau

Hildegard Peplau ( born September 1, 1909 in Reading, Pennsylvania, † March 17, 1999 in Sherman Oaks, California ) was an American nurse, Pflegetheoretikerin and professor. She developed the theory of interpersonal relationship on which you base the nursing model of psychodynamic nursing. Her works are considered the first nursing theory to Florence Nightingale's Notes on Nursing, published in 1859 and they had on the development of nursing research, nursing education, nursing culture and nursing self-image significant influence.

Career

Peplau put her exam from a nurse in 1931 and led since 1936 at Bennington College in Vermont Health Service. During this activity, she took a degree in interpersonal psychology, which in 1943 with a BA completed. They occurred during the Second World War as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and was used in neurology and psychiatry. After 1945, she continued her studies and graduated as MA in psychiatric nursing. For this range and similar institutions were the primary source also their practical experiences in nursing. 1953 Peplau received her doctorate in curriculum development. In 1954 she was appointed as a lecturer at Rutgers University, she qualified in 1960. 1969 she was executive director of the American Nurses Association ( ANA), took over the presidency of the organization in the years 1970 to 1972, 1972 to 1974 she served the ANA as Vice President. In addition to teaching she was a member of the Expert Council of the World Health Organization and nursing consultant to the U.S. Air Force, the United States Public Health Service and the National Institute of Mental Health.

Peplau died on 17 March 1999 in Sherman Oaks, California.
