Hippomedon

Hippomedon (Greek Ἱππομέδων ) is a figure in Greek mythology. He was one of the Seven against Thebes.

The Descent of Hippomedon is variously given in the sources. Either he was a son of Talaus or Aristomachos or Mnesimachos and Metidike, daughter of Talaus. In the former case, he was a brother of the Argive king Adrastus, in the latter two cases, however, his nephew.

Hippomedon lived either in Mycenae or in a castle in Lerna, the foundations of living in the 2nd century AD Greek travel writer Pausanias saw yet. With Euanippe Hippomedon begat a son, Polydorus epigones.

In the train of the Seven against Thebes Hippomedon also participated. In the Greek tragedian Aeschylus he appears as a giant, strong hero, the fire-breathing monster Typhon led as an emblem on his shield and defended by Hyperbios, named after Athena Onkaia city gate of Thebes attacked. According to Euripides, he fought on the other hand Ogygischen gate. According to the representation of the Libraries of Apollodorus referred Hippomedon the Onkaischen gate position and came to the duel between Eteocles and Polynices ( the mutually killed ) by the hand of Ismarus, son of Astacus, died. In the Thebaid of the Roman epic poet Publius Papinius Statius Hippomedon won a discus competition, protecting the remains of Tydeus, killed the Crenaeus and was himself killed by a preponderance of the city defenders and of Crenaeus ' grandfather, the river god Ismenus, sent floods.
