Adrastus

Adrastus (Greek Ἂδραστος ) In Greek mythology, the son of Talaus and king of Argos. The ancient writers mention three different possible mothers: Lysianassa, daughter of Polybus ( Pausanias), Lysimache, daughter of Abas ( Libraries of Apollodorus ) or Eurynome, the daughter of Iphitus ( Hyginus Mythographus ). He was the father Aegialeus, the Kyanippos, the Deïpyle, the Argeia and Aigiale.

King of Sicyon and Argos

Because of a feud between the two most powerful Argive royal Talaus was killed by Amphiaraus and Adrastus fled to Sicyon to his maternal grandfather Polybus, whose daughter he married Amphithea and whose throne he inherited. Again reconciled with Amphiaraus, he returned to Argos back, took control over the content of Argos Biantiden and handed over the government of Sicyon to Ianiskos. The Amphiaraos he gave his sister Eriphyle wife.

Seven against Thebes

To use the Polynices again into his kingdom, Adrastus led the train of the seven princes against Thebes. Since Amphiaraos initially refused to participate in the war and also discouraged others follow suit, bribed Adrastus on the advice of Iphis Eriphyle. This persuaded her husband to participate in the train. There they all came up to Adrastus, as it had predicted Amphiaraos. Adrastus had on his chariot pulled by his horses Kairos and Areion flee, the car broke down, however, and he was eventually rescued by his horse Areion, a gift of Heracles.

Epigonenzug

Ten years later, he was attracted by the sons of the heart who epigones, to a second expedition against Thebes, which has now been taken and destroyed; but his son Aigialeus fell in battle, and the father died of grief about it in Megara.
