Hisashi Inoue

Hisashi Inoue (Japanese井上 ひさし, actually井上 厦; born November 16, 1934 in Kawanishi; † 9 April 2010) was a Japanese writer, novels, dramas, and has published comic fiction.

Life

Inoue was born in the small town of Kawanishi in Yamagata Prefecture. When he was four years old, his father died and he was sent to a Christian Baptist school. He graduated from Sophia University.

Inoue's career began in radio and in 1969 he wrote his first stage play Nihonjin no Heso. He received the 1982 Award for Seiun Kirikiri -Jin as the best novel in 1991 and the Tanizaki - Jun'ichirô Prize for Shanghai Moon (シャンハイ ムーン, Shanhai MUN ).

From 2003 to 2007 he was the president of Japanese PEN Centre.

In October 2009 lung cancer was diagnosed. Despite medical treatment Inoue died at the age of 75 years on April 9, 2010.
