HMS Discovery (1874)

HMS Discovery was a Royal Navy ship, which was known by the Arctic Expedition 1875-1876 under George Nares.

The Discovery was built at the shipyard of Stephens & Sons in Dundee, Scotland, in 1873 and ran from the stack. It had three masts and was equipped with a 365 horsepower steam engine. Originally christened the Bloodhound and provided as a whaler, the ship was purchased in 1874 by the British Admiralty. She was one of two ships ( Discovery: Captain Henry F. Stephenson, HMS Alert: Captain Albert Hastings Markham ), which should, under the direction of Captain George Nares ( 1831-1915 ) bring a British Arctic expedition to the North Pole.
