HMS Untamed (P58)

HMS Untamed ( P58 ) was a submarine of U- class of the Royal Navy, which sank during World War II shortly after its commissioning in an accident.

The keel laying of the submarine with the hull number " P58 " took place on October 9, 1941 at Vickers Armstrong at Newcastle -upon- Tyne, England. The launch took place on December 8, 1942, the putting on 14 April 1943.

After the submarine was assigned under the command of Lieutenant Gordon Maurice Noll, RN, of the 3rd submarine flotilla in Holy Loch (Scotland ) to complete the training of the crew. On 30 May 1943, the Untamed took part in an anti-submarine defense exercise with ships of the 8th Escort Group. After the end of the third exercise, at 14:50 clock the submarine did not appear despite transmitted by knocking signal prompts used for training purposes by the Yacht Shemara. This then put up a distress call. 17:16 you could hear a series of noises aboard the Shemara and shortly afterwards arriving HMS Thrasher, which indicated that they tried to board the submarine to blow out the tank and start the engine. At 17:45 all ended life characters, attempts by the water surface, known to the crew through knocking on contact, there was no reaction. Due to the deteriorating weather another attempt could be made only from 1 July to reach the submarine. On the characters of divers who knocked on the outside of the hull, there was no response, also had no discernible damage to the hull to detect. Man on board: On the loss of the submarine died every 40 (36 according to other sources ).

After recovery of the submarine on 5 July 1943, managed to reconstruct the cause of the crash. Apparently, it was in an attempt to bring the externally mounted Log into the interior of the boat to get it to recalibrate come to a massive flooding in the torpedo room. This was caused by an incorrectly built-in valve that was open while it was closed after the display. A similar incident has probably caused the loss of the identical HMS Vandal, which was three months earlier disappeared in a training cruise in the vicinity ( references to the local cause of the accident arose, however, after the discovery of the wreck in 1994 ). The crew seems to have tried about four hours to pump out the water again, rather than to leave the submarine. It was suspected that the increasing level of carbon dioxide in exhaled air resulted in impairment of judgment. Finally, the men went into the engine room to using immersed rescuers to leave the boat through the rear hatch. For this purpose it was necessary to flood the engine room, as Luke would have been otherwise against the water pressure can not be opened. Because of another, improperly installed valve, the floods delayed so long that the crew members were unconscious from lack of oxygen and died before they could leave the wreck. After their rescue the dead of the Untamed were buried in the cemetery of Dunoon.

The submarine was repaired after his rescue, renamed HMS Vitality and put back into service in July 1944. Nearly two years later, on 13 February 1946, the Vitality has been sold and scrapped it for scrap.
