The frigate Zr. Ms. De Zeven Provinciën ( F802 ) is the flagship of the Royal Netherlands Navy and lead ship of the De Zeven - Provinciën - class.

Name

The name De Zeven Provinciën reminiscent of the seven northern provinces of the Netherlands, the Union of Utrecht founded on 23 January 1579. This resulted in 1581 the Republic of the Seven United Provinces. The frigate F802 is the eighth ship to bear this name.

Ship deck

The De Zeven - Provinciën - class was developed as part of a trilateral agreement to develop a common platform ship between the Federal Republic of Germany, the Netherlands and Spain ( " Trilateral Frigate Cooperation", TFC ). In Germany the class 124 (Sachsen class) was built under this Agreement, in Spain, Alvaro de Bazán - class.

History

The ship was placed on the Koninklijke Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen in the Netherlands on 1 September 1998 at Kiel. The launch took place on 8 April 2000. The ship was put into service on 26 April 2002 and is the first of four air defense and leadership frigates (LCF ) of the De Zeven Provinciën class. The frigate is based in Den Helder.

In March 2006, broke on board the container ship "Hyundai Fortune " owned by Hyundai Merchant Marine in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen, a fire out. The Zr. Ms. De Zeven Provinciën, which was at the time in the Horn of Africa as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in use, the first ship reached the freighter in distress and was able to rescue all 27 crew members.

As part of the same operation, the frigate was trying to catch a South Korean trawler that had been taken over by pirates, together with the U.S. destroyer USS Roosevelt ( DDG -80) in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia. After the privateers threatened to kill the crew of the trawler, the two ships but withdrew.
