Hock (wine)

Hock is the English term for German white wine from the Rhine. The name is derived from the Rheingau Wine of the city Hochheim am Main, a wine town near Wiesbaden.

The term was probably its spread after Queen Victoria in Hochheim in 1845 to visit. Because of the good taste of Hochheim wines and their ascribed to them Gesundheitsförderlichkeit established itself the saying: A good Hock keeps off the doc!

Queen Victoria in memory of a vineyard was named after her Queen Victoria Mountain and built the Queen Victoria Memorial in Hochheim.

The specification Hock is approved for

  • A sweet, white, German table wine that bears the geographical name "Rhine" and comes from white grapes, and for
  • A sweet white quality wines. A., who bears the name of one of the regions Ahr, Hessian Mountain Road, Middle Rhine, Nahe, Rheingau, Rheinhessen or Pfalz and comes from white grapes.
