Hoffmann's pika

Ochotona hoffmanni is a mammal of the family of pikas ( Ochotonidae ) among lagomorphs ( Lagomorpha ). Its distribution area includes only two mountainous regions in Mongolia and Russia.

Dissemination

Ochotona hoffmanni is known only from two mountain ranges in Mongolia and Russia. In Mongolia, it involves the Hentiyn - Nuruu hills of Bayan- Ulan Mountains ( Khentii Mountains ), in Russia by the Erman Mountains in Jablonowygebirge in the Chita Oblast in the Mongolian- Russian border area. The total area of the range of amounts to approximately 600 square kilometers.

Way of life

Over the life of this pikas has no information. The habitat consists of rocky surfaces and embankments.

System

Ochotona hoffmanni is assigned as an independent species the pikas ( genus Ochotona ) and the subgenus Pika, subspecies are not known. In the first description in 1996, the taxon as a subspecies of the Altai pikas ( Ochotona alpina ) was considered, but it was recognized as a distinct species in 1999 due to morphological characteristics as well as characteristics of the bio-acoustics and the genome.

Threats and conservation

The species is classified due to their very small distribution area as threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN ) ( endangered ). As a threat to the existence especially the effects of global warming are considered, since the type is sensitive to temperature changes and there is no possibility to reach other habitats.
