The High Wall in Southern Lower Austria represents a distinctive karst plateau of 8 km and a width of 2.5 km, which has an altitude of 900 to 1000 m and in Plackles ( 1132 m) culminates.

General

The name derives from the steep rock barrier on the south and southeast side. The plateau is about 8 km long and extends from the region of Plackles in the southwest to the so-called wall corner in the northeast.

Reachable the plateau of the Hohe Wand is built over one in eleven months, on 3 December 1932 by Karl Buresch ( 1878-1936 ), Governor of Lower Austria, opened toll road that branches off the route between Stollhof and Maier village. From August 15 1965 to disassembly on August 10, 1994, a double chairlift Gruenbach existed in addition to the Placklesgipfel, the passengers brought in 19-minute Hohe Wand. Light but hardly committed Hiking trails lead from Dürnbachtal, of Green Brook and from the "rear " of Mies stream from the mountain. In the area of Hohe Wand can be found numerous caves; the Unicorn Cave in Hirnflitzstein at Dreistetten is open to the public as a show cave. A total of about 250 caves are loud country club for caving in Vienna and Lower recorded in areas of the high wall. For climbers, is also the descent into the wind hole ( cadastre number 1863/30 ), a vertical cave in Saugraben right next to the marked path of meaning.

Because of the boundary layer at the Vienna Basin and the accessibility by car are on the high wall also popular launch sites for paragliders and hang gliders. There are three launch sites for paragliders and hang gliders: the most frequented Oststartplatz, demanding and used mainly by hang gliders Südstartplatz as well as the launch site little-used Almfrieden. The Hohe Wand is particularly suitable for south-east wind conditions for flying and is a mountain of Vienna. [Note 1]

On the plateau several mountain guesthouses and refuges are to find, but also many weekend houses, especially in the so-called wall Dörfl.

A part of the high wall is provided as a nature park Hohe Wand under protection. Under the title " Hohe Wand" but also tourist attractions are marketed, some of which are criticized as difficult to reconcile with a natural reserve, in particular the " Skywalk ". This approximately 5 feet above the rock wall that extends above and 18 ton viewing platform was built in 2002 by the Association nature park Hohe Wand.

A 18 -meter-high wood-clad steel tower built, allowing the prospect to the Piestingtal, Schneeberg and to Ötscher: 2004 was near the former Wiener Neustadt house ( alpine and Heritage Museum Hohe Wand today).

After three Alpine ibex are bushed from a reserve in 2003, these animals increased relatively strongly on the high wall, although the Simple tile wildlife habitat is high alpine area. In 2009, there were about 40 animals and in 2011 it was estimated around 60 animals. Because of this proliferation and thereby caused heavy browsing on plants and forest, 2011, nine copies, released for launch in 2012 and 2013 twelve 30. Despite these victories, the colony in 2013 has grown to about 75 animals. Thus, the hunters called 2013/2014 a higher firing rate and it was contemplated resettle some of the animals in a high Alpine area of Bundesforste to Altenmarkt im Pongau.

Geology

The mostly forested area has not only inactive Karsttalungen (eg Leiterngraben, Saugraben ) also sinkholes and karst depressions ( eg, Long meadow with the sinkhole " On Lurf " ) on. The plateau is built of high-altitude high - wall - blanket from the Norian Hallstatt Lime ( = " Wandkalk " ), only in the southwest are geographically subordinate to the main dolomite and other rocks in the construction involved. Hallstatt limestone dips to the southeast from a powerful flexure to Gosau trough of the New World and is here in an impressive unity of the SW-NE running, eponymous wall crashes of around 200 m height with numerous small and medium-sized caves. Northwesterly waste of Hohe Wand is powered by two gorges, the Great and the Little Hermitage, traversed, which are also characterized by the presence of smaller caves.
