Hohenwart Abbey

The Convent High Wart is a former monastery of the Benedictine nuns in Hohenwart in Bavaria in the Diocese of Augsburg.

History

The monastery was (probably from the house of Andechs ) founded in 1074 by Count Ortolf and his sister Wiltrudis. It was dissolved in 1803 in the wake of secularization. The monastery were no takers, so the nuns could live on there. It is since 1876 owned by the rain Wagner Foundations Dillingen under the local leadership of the Franciscan Sisters Dillinger. From the time of the Benedictine monastery valuable witnesses are obtained: The Bavarian State Library in Munich involves both a precious Gospel book, called Golden Book of Hohenwart with font from 1100 and miniatures of 1230 another 70 valuable books from the monastery Hohenwart.

The ancient Romanesque basilica fell victim to a fire in 1895. Even today point to the Romanesque architectural form: the Peter chapel - built in 1230 as the founder of grave - laying - the imposing Romanesque column, and the cloister and the Romanesque vaults. A particular gem is the Rococo ( 1739 ) converted convent pharmacy with the delicate stucco ceiling, point their figural representations to the monastic medicine. Particularly interesting is the stucco relief showing Christ as the true pharmacist.

Today, the former Benedictine monastery of the regional center for the disabled Regens Wagner Hohenwart.
