Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij

The Hollandse Teekenmaatschappij ( Dutch character society, the modern spelling would Hollandse Tekenmaatschappij ) was an international association of artists who wanted to promote the exhibition of watercolors. My seat was in The Hague.

History and Members

In 1855 the Société Belge des Aquarellistes was founded in Brussels, Belgium. One of the founders was Willem Roelofs. The company organized exhibitions Belgian watercolourist. To this end, a few years later were also invited artists of the Hague School. For this collaboration, the Hollandse Teekenmaatschappij was founded on 31 January 1876 of Bernardus Johannes Blommers, John Bosboom, Jozef Israels, Jacob Maris, Willem Maris, Anton Mauve, Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Philip Sadée s John Stortenbeker .. Dutch members were, among others, David Artz, Albert Neuhuys, Elchanon Verveer, Sina van Houten and Willem Bastiaan Tholen.

The association was very successful internationally, living abroad honorary members were: Paul Jean Clays, Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriël, Charles Hermans, Edouard Huberti, Jean Baptiste Madou, Charles Rochussen and Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Also, the German painter Max Liebermann, Hubert von Herkomer from London, Mosè Bianchi in Milan and Vincenzo Cabianca from Rome were a member.
