The Holstenau is a border river between Holstein and Dithmar or the districts of Steinburg and Dithmar. He is first mentioned in 1568 in documents handed.

The construction of the North Sea-Baltic Canal from 1887 to 1895 the Holstenau was separated into several parts. The first part is located east of the channel and begins in the northwest of Holstenniendorf. He is heavily straightened. The subsequent portion west of the canal, which was only slightly straightened begins north of Hochdonn and east of Eggstedt. The next, again east of the channel extending portion begins west-southwest of Gribbohm. North of Aebtissinwisch they also resulted in the severing of the North Sea-Baltic Canal Wilsterau; Today it opens there in the bog channel. There are routes where the former meandering river bed of the Holstenau was completely replaced by the Kiel Canal between the parts still preserved.

The Holstenau is not to be confused with the Holsten ditch the south to the Elbe formed on the border between Holstein and Dithmar.
