Holy Saviour's monastery of Yerazgavors

The Armenian settlement Schirakawan lay on the right bank of the river Akhurian ( Turkish Apraçay ) at today's Turkish village in the province of Kars Başşuregel. History

The construction of the monastery of St. Amenap'rkitch was commissioned by Bagratidenkönig Smbat I. Jerasgawors ( Schirakaschat ) in the district of Shirak the historic Armenian region Ayrarat in order. The construction began in the year 892 (the year of Smbats coronation ) and the 893 (as an earthquake, the city recorded ). The Catholicos Hovhannes wrote in his book "History of Armenia" that the Church in Schirakawan was shortly after his appointment as Patriarch 897/898 built and that it was located near the Royal Palace. It was destroyed by the Seljuks in the 1060er years and rebuilt in the zakaridischen era in the late 12th century. An inscription on its walls mentioned that restoration works between the years 1072 and 1081 were held. At a later date the church was converted into a fortified tower. While this reclassification, the eastern niches and many windows have been filled and sealed, and the corners of the church were increased. An external staircase was added at the north end of the west facade. The dome of the church collapsed in the 19th century. Nikolai Marr noticed the remains of the polygonal drum of the original dome. This dome collapsed later and was replaced by a conical dome with a smaller diameter. The replacement dome also collapsed largely and was replaced by a wooden roof beams were rotten and 1913 were also shortly before the invasion. Marr wrote that the building underwent repairs in 1913 and converted to the parish church of the village. He mentioned that during this repair work excavating the villagers numerous architectural fragments, but none was recorded and the most re-used in the new buildings.
