Holywood

Holywood ( Irish: Ard Mhic Nasca; German: " The amount of MacNasca " ) is a city in north- east of Ireland in County Down in Northern Ireland.

Holywood is in the north of the Northern Ireland County Down on the south shore of Belfast Lough ( Bay of Belfast), which is the mouth of the River Lagan. The nearest towns are Belfast (10 kilometers south-west ) and Bangor (12 miles to the east ). It belongs administratively to the North Down District. The George Best Belfast City Airport is a few miles away.

The engl. Name of the place, originally Latin Sanctus Boscus ( " Holy Forest " ), dates back to the Normans, the publication refers to the surrounding a monastery founded before 640 woodland. The anglicized form emerges first documented in the 14th century as Haliwode on. The pronunciation of the name today is the same as Hollywood.

The population Holywoods was determined during Census 2001, 12,037 people; of which 23.0% were Catholic and 68.6 % Protestant. In 1900 the city had about 3,500 inhabitants. In the Palace Barracks in Holywood is the headquarters of the Security Service ( " MI5 " ) in Northern Ireland.
