Homathko River

The Homathko River is one of the larger rivers in the southern Coast Mountains in British Columbia and one of the few rivers that cut through the mountain range from the Chilcotin Plateau to the fjords.

It empties into the Pacific Ocean at the end of Bute Inlet opposite the mouth of Southgate River, just east of it.

The catchment area of Homathko covers an area of 5700 km ².

The mountains that flank the Homathko River, are among the highest in the Coast Mountains, including Mount Waddington west of the river in the Waddington Range and Mount Queen Bess east of the river, opposite the Homathko Icefield.

The Homathko River has its origin in the northern part of the Niut Range, flows from there down to the Chilcotin Plateau, then turns south to Lake Tatlayoko and breaks through from there the coastal mountains on the way to the sea and Bute Inlet.

The valley of the River Homathko is very difficult to navigate. The strong current makes it impossible to cross the river. The valley is frequented by grizzly bears.
