Horace B. Smith

Horace Boardman Smith ( born August 18, 1826 in Whitingham, Vermont, † December 26, 1888 in Elmira, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1871 and 1875 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Horace Boardman Smith went to Classical Classical Studies. In 1847 he graduated from Williams College in Williamstown (Massachusetts ). He studied law. After receiving his license to practice law in 1850 he began to practice in Elmira. He held several local offices. In 1859 he became a judge in Chemung County - a post he held until 1860. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1870 for the 42nd Congress Smith was in the 27th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Hamilton Ward senior on March 4, 1871. In 1872 he stood as a candidate in the 28th electoral district of New York for the 43rd Congress. After a successful election, he entered on March 4, 1873, the successor of Freeman Clarke. Since he gave up for reelection in 1874, he retired after March 3, 1875 from the Congress. During his last term he had presided over the Committee on Elections.

After his conference time he went to Elmira until 1883 his work as a lawyer after. Between 1883 and 1888 he was a judge on the New York Supreme Court Then he returned to his home back in Elmira, where he died on December 26, 1888. His body was then interred in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
