Horatio Walker

Horatio Walker ( born May 12, 1858 in Listowel, Ontario, † September 27, 1938 in Sainte- Pétronille, Quebec ) was a Canadian photographer and painter.

Life

Horatio Walker was the son of Thomas Walker and his wife Jeanne Maurice. Between 1873 and 1876, Walker was training with the photographers Notman and Fraser in Toronto. Later he worked as a photographer in Rochester for a number of years. The early 1880s, Walker traveled Europe and learned the French Barbizon school, and became heavily influenced by her. In the later years he spent his winters in New York City and the summer months on Île d' Orléans.

In 1883 he married in Toronto Jeanette Pretty ( † 1938). From their marriage, two children, Alice (1884-1891) and Horatio Jr. (1886-1910) went out. His daughter died of diphtheria and his son of tuberculosis. Through the tragedy of his wife Jeanette suffered a nervous breakdown and lived from 1914 until her death in a psychiatric ward.
